7 Beauty Skin Care Tips for Healthy skin Women 50+

Healthy, Beautiful Skin at 50+

Being in my 50's, I understand the challenges around having beautiful, healthy skin as we get older.

I am a firm believer that it is not about removing wrinkles or supposed flaws but rather nurturing your skin & striving for beautiful, healthy skin at every age.

I believe in looking & feeling your best version of YOU- naturally at 50 years plus!

So here we go .....

Ageing is a normal and healthy part of life. But there is no doubt that our skin functions differently as we get older.

If you are 50 years plus you may have noticed the following less desirable changes in your skin –

  • collagen loss resulting in less plumped skin
  •  skin is drier due to a decrease in oil production
  • your skin is thinner and more sensitive &
  • the colour of spots and blemishes has become darker.
It’s not all bad news though. Once you are aware of the changes in your skin’s needs at this age, you can take steps to have your skin in its best condition possible. This leaves you with healthy glowing skin & feeling confident and beautiful in the skin you’re in.

At reluminate beauty our vision is to inspire women to embrace their natural raw beauty and to look their best at every and any age. It is about happy ageing, not trying to look 25 again ….but looking your best version of you at 50 plus.

Our focus is on keeping your skin healthy. When you have healthy skin, you look your best, no matter what your age.

Now that we know some of the common problems that can arise with mature skin, here are 7 Beauty Care Tips for beautiful healthy skin for Women over 50.

1. Be aware of skin sensitivity

It is very common for skin to become more sensitive to the sun during or following menopause.

Skin can become thinner and more reactive and produces less melanin when oestrogen levels drop, making menopausal women more vulnerable to sun damage such as sunburn and sunspots, as well as prickly heat type rashes.

This means you must be vigilant in protecting against sun exposure and damage.

So sun protection is still as critical as ever as you are still vulnerable to sun damage and skin cancers.

Apply sunscreen to your face every day before you leave the house. Use a good natural sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. No matter what the weather is like it's important to protect your skin from the sun's harsh rays!

Also you may have noticed emerging age spots, also called "liver spots. These are flat, brown spots often caused by years in the sun.

They are bigger than freckles and commonly show up on areas like the face, hands, arms, back, and feet.

To help prevent more age spots it is important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that helps protect against two types of the sun's rays (UVA and UVB).

You may have also noticed skin tags appearing on your skin. These are small, usually flesh-coloured growths of skin that have a raised surface.

Both age spots and skin tags are harmless, although sometimes skin tags can become irritated. If your age spots or skin tags bother you, talk to your doctor about having them removed.

Natural ingredients like Kakadu Plum (very high in Vitamin C) & Snowflower extract can assist with reducing & evening out pigmentation.

2. Serums are beneficial to mature skin

Serums have a higher level of active ingredients than a moisturiser, and can add so much more to your specialised skincare regime especially when targeting mature skin.

For wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and invisible photodamage look to Bakuchiol.

Bakuchiol has been shown to mimic the action of retinol. Like retinol bakuchiol is a skin-cell growth stimulator and an antioxidant that helps generate cells.

  • It stimulates collagen production and increases the cell turnover rate.
  • It improves texture and tone of our skin.
  • Smooths fine lines, prevents wrinkles. Reduces dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Bakuchiol when applied topically, promotes skin renewal, brightens skin tone, clearing up hyperpigmentation, and aids in production of collagen.

The natural plant compound has been shown to be gentler than retinol, with similar anti-ageing benefits. Because of the lack of skin irritation, Bakuchiol is appropriate for all skin types.

3. Switch to a cream Facial Cleanser

As we age, our skin loses moisture, nutrients, and natural oils, which can result in drier skin. So, consider swapping out your current facial cleanser for one that has a creamy texture.

Mature skin should be treated with a mild, non-irritating cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils or irritate dry and sensitive skin.

Use a cream cleanser, then use a lukewarm water to rinse, and pat skin dry with a soft cloth

Slower cell turnover as we mature, means our skin needs help with exfoliation and luminosity. It is therefore important to exfoliate gently & regularly, but proceed with caution. Exfoliation is necessary, but don’t overdo it

The outer layer of skin becomes thinner and more delicate post 50 so to avoid aggravation take a minimal approach to physical exfoliation.

Regularly exfoliate your skin using a gentle scrub or peel. This will help remove dead skin cells and reveal brighter, younger-looking skin.

4. Give Yourself a Facial Massage

A daily facial massage does wonders for the skin at any age, but is especially transformative for mature complexions.

It works to help sculpt the facial muscles (like cheekbones and jawline) and can reduce fluid build-up, as well as improve blood flow, cell turnover, tissue toning, and boost collagen production.

Collagen is the support net of our skin. It’s what gives the structural integrity of the skin and as it declines, skin becomes loose, sags and wrinkles form.

When applying any type of skincare product, always start with your neck and work your way up. This will help to prevent the formation of wrinkles and sagging skin on your face.

5. Restore Moisture & Hydration

Apply a moisturiser twice every day, especially after you wash your face. It will keep it hydrated and looking younger.

The best time to reapply is right before bed so it has plenty of time to sink in overnight.

For wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and invisible photodamage look to Bakuchiol (a natural version of retinol). When applied topically, it helps to promote skin renewal, brighten skin tone, clear up hyperpigmentation and aid in production of collagen.

Another key ingredient for brightening up a dull complexion and erasing sun spots is vitamin C, which helps treat and fight against free radical damage that causes oxidative stress and skin aging.

This powerful antioxidant also helps to fade away hyperpigmentation.

6. Don’t forget about eye cream

To help prevent eye wrinkles, use a good quality eye cream and make sure to apply it around the entire eye area.

The skin around your eyes is very delicate—and therefore can give away your age. If you’re dealing with skin care concerns like crows feet or dark circles  it’s important to use an eye cream specifically designed to target them.

7. Think about your Lifestyle Choices

The key to ageing gracefully is to take care of yourself both inside and out. Here are some tips for looking and feeling your best as you age.

Get regular exercise to keep your body strong and toned. It helps improve circulation and keeps your body healthy overall.

Exercise is an important part of looking and feeling great. Try doing yoga or taking a walk daily. Healthy perspiration and the oil production it creates is the best lubricant for our skin.
